Cape Town will host the world’s only FIA-sanctioned single-seater race series on 28 February, with the track design offering fans a mouthwatering circuit that circumnavigates some of the Mother City’s most iconic scenes.
Cape Town Formula E track set around iconic sites
According toDBL APX, the track will run around Cape Town Stadium, with the the start line situated between the athletics track and the Greenpoint Cricket Club. Drivers will roar off along Helen Suzman Boulevard before a sharp left taking them towards the V&A Waterfront, with a straight shot towards Moullie Point set to get fans on their feet.
Fans are set to be treated to a host of Formula E delights, with Co-Founder and Chairman of e-Movement Iain Banner saying that several events are planned around the day of Cape Town’s maiden start buzzer going off.
“The race is what I call the celebration,” he said. “But we’ve come up with what we are calling the e-Fest. And the e-Fest is a five-day programme around sustainability and eMobility.”
He said that a two day conference of eMobility will kick things off, “where we’ll have all things ‘E’ from one-wheelers to bicycles, possibly even a plane and a boat to showcase to the public what ‘E’ is all about both now and going into the future”.
‘I think it’s going to be a fantastic event’
Formula E’s Alberto Longo said that Cape Town “ticks the box of every single thing” required to host a blockbuster Formula E event.
“We want to go to iconic venues that you can really identify very quickly in one shot on TV, and I think this is one of the main reasons we are in South Africa – because they really offer us one of the best, most amazing locations that we will ever do a race at. Having Table Mountain as a backdrop which is a landmark of the city, the sea, the stadium, I think we are going to be able to put a fantastic event up there,” he said.
