Car of the Year 2021: Toyota and Hyundai dominate contenders list

South African Car of the Year finalists have been announced and it’s no surprise that Toyota and Hyundai have dominated the list with the most nominations. 


There are nine categories and 23 finalists fighting for pole position in Budget, Compact, Family Compact, Family, Premium, Performance, New Energy, Adventure SUV and Double Cab. The 10th category, luxury, has no contenders.

With the market saturated with cross-overs, the most competitive category is the Compact Family with six contenders: The Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, Peugeot 2008, Toyota Corolla Sedan and Volkswagen T-Roc.

The Budget category includes Hyundai Grand i10, Suzuki S-Presso and the Toyota Starlet going head-to-head and the Compact category has the Hyundai Venue, Opel Corsa and Suzuki Vitara Brezza vying for top honours. The Family category includes the Volkswagen Caravelle which is an interesting finalist that has proven extremely popular.

Hyundai and Toyota each have an impressive 4 models that made the finalist list. Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Suzuki have 2 finalists each and Audi, BMW, Kia, Land Rover, Opel, Peugeot have one finalist each

The contenders are chosen by the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) – and the final round of scoring will end on 11 June. A list of winners will be announced on 26 June.
