After a harsh 29% drop in 2016, the Kenyan new vehicle market endures another steep decline in 2017 at -23%, bringing total sales to 10.722 vs. 19.451 in 2015. Thanks to strong medium and heavy truck sales, Isuzu remains the #1 brand in the country, following the market with a 21% drop to 34.4% share but Toyota is catching up somewhat at -8% to 20.8% of the market vs. 17.5% a year ago. Mitsubishi (-31%) and Tata (-35%) fall faster than the market resulting in reduced shares, rounding up the Top 4 like in 2016. Ford (+8%), Volkswagen (+103%) and Renault (+145%) manage to gain ground and drastically improve their ranking to #5, #7 and #10 respectively.
The light vehicle nameplates ranking sees its podium unchanged on 2016: the Toyota Hilux (-13%) remains the best-seller in Kenya above the Isuzu KB (-14%) and Toyota Land Cruiser 70 (-9%), all three gaining share as they fall slower than the market. The Toyota RAV4 is up 5-fold on its 2016 score to gain 11 spot and land at #4, knocking the Ford Ranger (-4%) down to #5. The Toyota Hiace (+95%) and Fortuner (+64%) break into the Top 10 but the most impressive arrival is the VW Polo Vivo imported from South Africa landing directly at #10 and #1 passenger car with more than 100 sales in Kenya. The only other passenger car in the Top 15 is the Renault Kwid up 5-fold on its inaugural volume in 2016 to #14 overall.
