Verstappen will start alongside World Driver’s Championship rival Lewis Hamilton who snatched second place from his Mercedes teammate Valterri Bottas with his final flying lap.

Hamilton could not match the speed of Verstappen, though, who clinched pole for the Dutch Grand Prix with a 1:08,885 just 0.038s ahead of his fierce rival.

Speaking after qualifying, Verstappen said: “It’s an amazing feeling to get pole position here. The crowd is incredible. Today was good, I hope we can finish this off tomorrow.”

Mercedes will hope to play the team game with both their cars up at the front while Sergio Perez couldn’t get out of the first Qualifying session after getting stuck in traffic.

Bottas said: “It’s definitely an enjoyable track with a nice atmosphere as well. Red Bull were a little bit out of reach today. We still have two cars in the top three so all to play for. I’m sure we’re gonna see an exciting race tomorrow.”

Hamilton paid tribute to the raucous Dutch crowd who are firmly in Verstappen’s corner and also gave the hometown hero props for his blazing quick lap.

“Max did an amazing lap! I was so close to catching him, I gave it everything. He deserves pole,” Hamilton said.
