MotorSport Academy South Africa shoot for the moon

Academy Director, Sean Grimes has laid out the ambition to establish proudly South African motorsport teams in each of the major motorsport disciplines within five years.

The acedemy also aim to help promising racers further their education with the setting up of academic Scholarships.

MotorSport Academy South Africa will seek to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity and promote local racers onto the world stage.

“You may say that the MotorSport Academy South Africa is just another motorsport academy in the long line of motorsport academies in the Country, but where we are different is that that entire Academy will be run by South African Nationals.

“The racers, support personnel, back-office staff, sponsors etc will all be from within. This is the unique approach we are taking, and this is our differentiator. There are many race teams in all disciplines that employ drivers from a specific country and then market themselves in that Country as supporting the racers. In reality this is not the case, and it is just a marketing exercise – we are different! I am not saying that we are the only ones with this philosophy, but we are the only ones, that we know of, that are taking this Academy style approach.

“MotorSport Academy South Africa is divided into three separate Sectors – Academy, Academia and Management. Our Goals are fairly simple – Promote South AfricaRacers onto the World stage (male and female, 2-wheel and 4-wheel), Provide a scholarship program to develop not only competition skills, but also design, engineering and mechanical skills in conjunction with Schools/Universities, and Produce a South African based, funded and fully-staffed team, to compete in each of the major motorsport disciplines within 5 years.

“We want to lay, for future generations, strong motorsport foundations, and nurture the next generation of talent which will take competition to the next level. We are searching for racers who can compete not only for podiums but for wins, drivers who can act as Ambassadors for their sport.

“We believe at the Academy that the talent is undoubtedly there but needs to be given an opportunity to excel. Our intention is to establish a dominant motorsport force worldwide, and to create an organisation which can produce racing talent across multiple disciplines for a number of years to come.

“Our ambition is, long-term, to build our own cars, bikes etc, thereby changing the perception of what many people believe motorsport is, and in order to do this, we need to portray a professional approach that people are proud to be associated with.

“By concentrating our focus on both the MotorSports and the Academia sides, we believe that we can help to develop different areas of specialism, and create future jobs for South African academic students, whilst promoting the Regions racers onto a world platform.

“We have a very simple mantra for the Academy – Where Talent Meets Opportunity.

“I have been told by many people, mentioning no names, that what we are looking to do at the Academy is not possible, that we are too ambitious, that the approach will not work etc. We obviously take the feedback on board and do not want to step on anybody’s toes, but, we know the individual components of the Academy do work, we know that given the right support and backing we can make the Academy a success.
