Back in the 1970s, Porsche customers with deep pockets were allowed to specify more than just the usual optional extras with their order. These high-rollers were sent to a department known as Sonderwunsch, which translates to special request, that offered customers the ultimate in exclusivity.

According to Motor Authority, the Stuttgart-based manufacturer wants Sonderwunsch to rival the Ferrari Special Projects division. This means that a customer will be able to work with Porsche engineers and designers to come up with a special edition model.

Sonderwunsch will allow you to spec to your heart’s content

Although you’ll surely be able to to make mechanical tweaks, the primary focus of the Sonderwunsch programme will be offering Porsche customers unique exterior and interior finishes. Want your Porsche’s paint to match that of a favourite bag? They’ll do it. Would you like a wrap akin to the racing liveries of the Pink Pig, Gulf 917 and Rothmans 959?  No problem. His and hers stitching in the headrests? Yes, sir.

Of course, if you have to ask what these will cost then you probably won’t be able to afford it. But the possibilities are virtually endless if your wallet is fat enough, just like at Ferrari’s Special Projects.

Some of the options that form part of the Sonderwunsch programme will start showing up on Porsche’s online configurator.

“It is our goal to provide customers around the globe with even more accurately tailored and demand-based products within the context of classic, existing and new cars. Starting with new possibilities for individualisation and personalisation of individual components, through the additional range of performance parts, up to the realisation of uniquely individualised sports cars, we have the right option for every customer.”
