Now this is exciting: The CEO of the F1 group has spoken about possible amendments to the current race calendar, and Stefano Domenicali has earmarked South Africa as a potential new host for a Grand Prix.
It’s coming home: SA ‘in front’ with a bid to land Grand Prix
Whether SA would be added to the circuit in 2022 or 2023 remains to be seen, but there is a genuine enthusiasm to bring F1 back to Africa – with a few countries in the north of the continent also vying for a spot on the race calendar.
Domenicali, who spoke to German publication Bild earlier this week, hinted that the amount of Grand Prix races each year would not be changing any time soon – but there is a desire to expand F1’s reach beyond Europe, towards some alternative destinations. South Korea is also fancied as a new addition to the roster:
“I would like to keep the F1 calendar at 23 races. We have inquiries from Africa, we are talking to South Africa, and countries in North Africa, plus one or two other races in the Far East, such as Korea. I can imagine a third of the races in Europe, the others spread around the world.”
South Africa was also mentioned as a potential addition to the F1 calendar moving forward.

Where would an F1 race in South Africa be held?
Warren Scheckter is the CEO of SAGP. They are the company trying to revive the South African Grand Prix, and he revealed earlier this year that the Kyalami circuit in Johannesburg needs some work to get up to Formula 1 standards. After all, it last hosted a F1 Grand Prix in 1993. But the popular venue may now have some competition.
Cape Town has been added to the Formula E calendar, and there are hopes that a street race can really capture the imagination of those at the very top of the motorsports industry. Once again, the Mother City and Joburg could end up duelling it out for hosting rights – but it’s understood that Kyalami is in pole position on this occassion.
